This office building was designed in response to the intense Southwest desert sun. Windows on the southeast and southwest sides of the building are shaded by roof overhangs and by the articulation of building setback forms. Building entrances and windows, on the south side of the building are protected from the sun by stair and elevator tower forms, and by deep overhangs.
Riverside Eye Center
The Riverside Eye Center is located on a tight and hilly site, at the corner of a busy intersection in downtown Riverside. The building’s shape and character was generated from this challenging site. Visitor parking and the main entrance to the building, is located on the south side of the building, The glass two story building entrance is shaded by a stair tower and deep overhangs, to conserve energy. Secured staff parking is located under the building. This facility was custom designed for doctors whose practices include Ophthalmology, ENT and Cosmetic Surgery. Natural daylight similar to the light required in an artist studio was provided in the cosmetic surgery exam rooms. The exam rooms were located on the north side of the building on the top floor with high windows to provide privacy and natural, non-glare indirect light. An optical shop was included in the ophthalmology suite. The building was literally shaped around the optical shop so as to provide exterior glass walls on two sides of the shop. This careful positioning allows maximum exposure of the optical display for motorist and pedestrians passing by. This display location is particularly effective at night. The optical ware “sparkles” from display lighting to remind motorist of the doctor’s location in the community.
